Divorce Support For Children in Calgary

They May Not Say Much - But They Feel It All

Children of divorce often face emotional, behavioural, and social challenges as they adapt to major changes in their family structure.

Research consistently shows that while most children adjust over time, the initial impact can include:

  • increased anxiety
  • sadness
  • anger
  • academic difficulties
  • loyalty conflicts between parents

(Amato, 2000; Kelly & Emery, 2003)

Protective factors can significantly buffer these effects. Such as:

  • supportive relationships
  • consistent routines
  • opportunities to process feelings

Evidence-based interventions, particularly those that involve skill-building and emotional support, have been demonstrated to enhance long-term outcomes and mitigate the risk of ongoing psychological distress (Pedro-Carroll, 2005).

Supporting children through separation and divorce
parenting advice to better understand your child and lead your family

Section 1: How Can We Help Your Family?

At Calgary Psych Services, we support children navigating the emotional complexities of divorce and separation by helping them put their thoughts and feelings into words.

In individual sessions, we create a safe, child-centred space where kids can explore their experiences and, when ready, share their emotions with one or both parents. This process reinforces that their voice matters and models healthy ways of expressing big feelings—such as sadness, anger, confusion, or worry—while strengthening communication within the family.

We also offer therapeutic group programs designed specifically for children of separation and divorce. In a small, age-appropriate setting, children meet peers who are going through similar transitions. Together, they learn that they are not alone, reduce feelings of isolation or shame, and develop coping tools to better understand and manage the changes in their families. These sessions help children reframe their experiences, make sense of two homes or blended family dynamics, and build confidence in their ability to adapt and thrive.

Steady Steps Groups - 2025

Steady Steps is a group that helps children find a sense of belonging.

A provisional psychologist leads this group to help children navigate family transitions positively and healthily. This group is composed of children who have previously experienced separation or divorce or are going through a family change now.

Through creative activities, peer connection, and guided discussions, children learn healthy ways to express their feelings, strengthen their resilience, and better understand their changing families.

Direct billing is available for most major insurance providers under psychological services. Please check with your benefits plan to confirm coverage. Receipts will also be provided for any uncovered portion.

👉 Limited spaces available.

Our goal is to provide children with a safe, supportive space to process the changes that come with parental separation or divorce. Through guided activities, open conversations, and peer connection, we help kids build emotional resilience, develop healthy coping strategies, and feel less alone in what they’re going through. We aim to support not just their adjustment in the moment — but their long-term confidence, relationships, and well-being.
