Assessment Questions:
A: If your child is struggling in school and you suspect learning difficulties it’s better to have them assessed and get answers. Arranging for a Psycho-Educational assessment will provide your family answers for your child’s cognitive abilities, how far behind same age peers they are for academic skills, and their social-emotional functioning for their age.
A: Booking a free 15-minute consultation with a Psychologist can help point you in the right direction. We pride ourselves on listening and making sure we’re doing what’s best for your family.
A: Having an ADHD assessment not only gives you insight into what’s happening for you but having a diagnosis can also help with accommodations at work or with post-secondary studies. Research indicates that “metacognition” – thinking about your thinking – can actually improve your outcome, therefore learning about how your own brain works can help you with improved functioning.
Social-Emotional Questions:
A: Yes, Psychologists use standardized tests and rating scales to determine how significant the difficulties are that your child is experiencing. Using “normed” measures allows us to compare their functioning vs peers their age. We can quantify their experiences and then communicate this with families. This leads to appropriate diagnoses and interventions with the overarching goal to provide support.
A: This is a common question for parents. The answer is that it varies depending on your child and what’s happening. It’s important for us to understand the full picture of what’s happening for your family and to ascertain your child’s strengths and weaknesses. During the intake session, we want to hear your family’s biggest concern for your child. We’ll ask you questions about how long the problem has been present and the intensity at which it occurs. All of these answers will shape how many sessions are needed.
General Questions:
A: We are able to direct bill to some insurance companies at this time. If yours isn’t on our list, we do issue an invoice immediately after each service so that our families can bill their insurance companies. We are happy to customize your bill to ensure your insurance accepts it; some insurance requires sessions to be laid out by the hour, while others are satisfied with the entire assessment as one fee. To help families, we are able to put the initial intake session, report writing, and debrief session in a parent’s name, while counselling sessions and assessments must be issued in the child’s name. This often allows families to access additional funds.
A: Yes! Our Psychologists are registered with The College of Alberta Psychologists. All invoices have a license number and signature, making it easy for you.
When choosing between a Provisional Psychologist and a Registered Psychologist, understanding the key differences can help you make the best decision for your family. A Provisional Psychologist is in the final stages of their training and works under the close supervision of a fully Registered Psychologist, providing high-quality assessment and therapy services at a lower cost. With a Provisional Psychologist, families effectively receive the benefit of two psychologists: the fresh perspective and dedication of the Provisional Psychologist, combined with the seasoned expertise of their supervisor. A Registered Psychologist, by contrast, has completed all required training, exams, and supervised practice, and is fully licensed to practice independently. Both can deliver effective, supportive care, but for families seeking a budget-friendly option, booking with a Provisional Psychologist offers thorough, supervised service at a lower rate.
